. today is ash wednesday, the first day of lent. this morning pope benedict xvi held a service, his first public announcement since announcing he's going to resign at the end of this month. our fox news religious correspondent, father jonathan morris joins us live. good morning to you. >> blessed ash wednesday >>steve: thank you. you were with us when we discovered he is going to retire. since then we've gotten more news and that is apparently the holy father got some part replaced on his pacemaker. >> that's right. years ago he had a pacemaker put in, and then about a month or so ago he had -- or a couple of months ago he had the pacemaker battery replaced. i think it's a pretty normal thing. i think the big news here, steve, is that while many people were saying there must be something else behind the news; it can't be that he's actually resigning on his own free will for the sake of the church. it turns out it looks like it's the case. >>steve: it certainly does. health reasons. those are live pictures of st. peter's square in vatican city, where you used to work for a number of years.
